Cheesemongers of Santa Fe

One of the trade-offs of living in a relatively small town is access to the proliferation of choice and ingredients available in the big cities. Lately, the culinary horizons of Santa Fe seems to be expanding, first with the Real Butcher Shop, and now, with its very own dedicated cheese shop, the Cheesemongers of Santa Fe. I was thrilled to have the assignment from Local Flavor to photograph cheesemonger John Gutierrez in the Marcy Street storefront location. Originally from New Mexico, he’s returned after years of learning about the sourcing, production and enjoyment of great cheese. For the story, writer and sommelier Erin Brooks and John embarked on a wine and cheese tasting, pairing two wines, one white, one red, with a series of different cheeses. John is an incredibly enthusiastic advocate for quality, sustainably produced and sourced cheese, and clearly loves sharing his vast knowledge. It was fascinating learning the parallels of tasting, terroir and texture that are true to both wine and cheese production. The store itself is beautifully designed, with classic illuminated deli cases and will feature a variety of pickles, olives and jams in addition to the delicious abundance of cheese.
